First Love

"I think I am in love" I said, sliding into a chair at the table that my friends and I usually sat at during meals.

"Really?" Michael said in a tone that screamed disbelief.

I was not surprised or offended by Michael's tone. At twelve years old, romantic love was a virtually unknown concept. I wasn't one of those boys that found girls to be icky. Growing up I had the ability to play with boys as well as girls.

Hell, being an orphan I never really knew the love of a mother or father. I had to admit that I longed for that sort of affection.  Don't get me wrong I wasn't one of those loveless children. I had the love of many of the others at the orphan, and even came to think of some of them as my make-shift family.

Michael and Lucifel were not just my closet friends, but my brothers as well.

"Whose the lucky lady?" Lucifel asked, leaning forward. Out of the three of us, Lucifel was the only one that had ever had a girlfriend. In fact, he had several.

"Sabine Alexander" I sighed. Just saying her name caused my heart to pound in my chest, and the little butterflies that dwell in my stomach to flutter about.

"The queen of hell?" They both said at the same time.

"You do realize she is a demon?" Michael said. Michael had this belief that one should only be with someone of the same species. Human with human. Angel with angel. Demon with demon, and ect.
  "I don't care." I told him. "I love her"

"Forget that. We have more important things to be concerned about. Like how we are going to get her to notice Gabriel. After being with someone like her husband, women like Sabine don't pay much attention to children" Lucifel state.

I saw the wheels turning in his head. He was already trying to come up with ways to get me my dream girl. Michael's expression was serious, like he was prepared to attempt to talk us out whatever plan came to light. Anyone who knew Michael wouldn't be shocked be this look. He always wore that expression, and tried to convince us to give up whatever scheme was turning in our mind.

Most of the time his attempts failed, and he would just go along with us in order to keep the amount of trouble down to the minimum. The only time he succeeded was when the consequences could be dire. Like breaking into God's palace, and stealing his slippers.

"When she falls in love I wont be a child" I told them.

"What are you going to do hunt her down when you get older?" Lucifel questioned.

"That wouldn't be a bad plan. Maybe by then he'll find a nice female angel to fall in love with, and forget about the demon" Michael said. He actually looked happy. An strange look for him. While he never looked miserable Michael wasn't the sort to wear an expression of pure joy.

"No." I said in almost a whisper. "I am going to attend the grand ball"

The grand ball was the biggest event held in heaven every year. All the biggest names in the mystical realms were invited. It was the only time when strife and war between different magical families and species were forgotten, at least while the ball went on. This was only because to fight at this ball was an automatic death sentence.

My friends said nothing to those words, but I could see that they were curious about my plans. Even Solemn Michael couldn't hide it.

"I found a spell that will make me appear older than I am" I said, pulling a rather large book for the knapsack that I had hidden underneath the table earlier. I had not been worried that someone would discover it. Michael, Lucifel, and I always hid things beneath this very table and no one ever found these items.

"The tome of Krysania?" Michael said, his voice dripping with amazement. "Where did you get this?"

"Under my bed. I was cleaning under there and there it was" I informed them.

"How did it get down there?" Lucifel pondered.

I shrugged my shoulder. I had no answers. I hadn't the fainest idea of how the book got under there. There could be countless numbers of reasons. From another orphan who had once slept in that bed before me hid it beneath the bed to the book appeared by itself because it picked me as its owner.

It is said that no matter how hard someone tries they cannot find one of the great tomes unless it wished to be located.

"Using any spells within that book would be unwise..." Michael started.

But, Lucifel chipped in before he could finish."Without having the two of us to come along."

Protest was clear in Michael eyes. I could almost hear the words that would escape his lips. "Come on, Micha" I said, smiling my most charming smile. Even at twelve my smile had that quality that Katia said could charm the pants of a priest. It was a boyish sort of grin.

I didn't need to say more, because Michael let out a groan and agreed to come along. The next few hours was spent with preparing for the spell. In my twelve years I never felt so nervous. I kept thinking what if the spell didn't work?

I shouldn't had worried because a few hours later I found myself within the building where the grand ball was being held. The ball was more wonderful than I had thought. Yes, I know a boy being exited by  such a thing. However, all those years spent looking at outside decorations one couldn't help, but come up with ideas what the inside looks like. Once inside what I imagined compared nothing to reality. Reality was better.

After taking everything it didn't take me long to find the object of my affection. She was surrounded by several other females, but to me Sabine was the most beautiful female in the room. She looked like a young Elizabeth Taylor.

Moving across the room I closed the distance between us. "My lady" I said, bowing. "May I have the pleasure of a dance?"

She smiled me, and said."Certainly, but may I have the honor of your name. I am Sabine"

"I am called Gabriel" I told her before pulling her onto the dance floor.

We spent the next two hours dancing and talking. It took all that time to gather the courage to kiss her. I should have known to take it slow, but I was a child and this was the first person I had fallen in love with.

Our lips barely brushed when I was yanked away from her. "What is going on here" A husky male voice yelled. Looking up I saw her husband, Damhain. I never seen anyone who looked larger or scarier in my entire life. It might have been that very moment or Damhain was quite the being.

"Love..." Sabine said, placing her hand upon his shoulder.

"I know the rules. Don't worry I have no intention of breaking any of the rules" Damhain said, glancing at his wife before he turned his attention towards me."But don't think that this will save you. I have friends in heaven, and they wouldn't blink if I asked them to kill you."

"Damhain" Sabine raised her voice. "Leave him be, he's just a boy"

The two of us turned our glaze towards her. She just nodded her head at her husband, who pulled away from me wearing an amused expression. She moved towards me, bending down on the ground next to me."Don't be shocked Gabriel. As you can tell the spell you used worked. Otherwise you and your friends would have been found out a long time ago. I just have special talents that makes spells ineffective on me"

"I love you" I blurted out.

"No you don't" She informed me."But, you will find someone you love with all your heart" She then leaned forward and gently kissed me on the lips.

It was both the most exciting and disappointing moment of my life. I had gotten my first kiss, but at the same time my hopes and dreams for our romantic life together was destroyed.

Now looking back I realized how right Sabine had been. I wouldn't say that I didn't love her, because I did. The love, however, would never compare to the love I feel for Elisabeth. I would never fall for her like I did for Elisabeth. I became a fallen angel in order to save Lizzie's life, and I know how that makes her feel. She wishes she could change things, that she could somehow make me an angel again. There is nothing she regrets more than the sacrifice I made to save her life.

I would make that very same sacrifice, and more without a second thought. I would become a monster if that was the only way to save her.
